Why Safe Zones Matter in Social Media Videos
A safe zone overlay is a visual guide that helps content creators avoid critical elements — like text, logos, or calls to action — being obstructed by UI elements, such as:
- UI buttons (like Like/Comment/Share)
- Captions and usernames
- Video cropping on certain screen sizes
Designing with these zones in mind keeps your videos clean, readable, and professional.

🛠️ How to Use These Overlays
- Download the PNG template you need.
- Import it into your video editor (Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, etc.).
- Place it on top of your footage as a guide.
- Align your text and key visuals inside the clear zones.
- Delete or hide the overlay before exporting your final video.
What are the safe zone margins?
All platforms below use a 1080 × 1920 px canvas (9:16 aspect ratio). The following guides show the recommended margins to avoid cropping or overlay conflicts.
Instagram Safe Zone
Play it safe by avoiding:
- The top 250 pixels – that’s where your name, audio, and other distractions live.
- The bottom 320 pixels – that’s prime CTA clutter.
- And about 120 pixels on both sides – because phones love to crop things just a little.
🟡 Your sweet spot?
Think of a nice cozy rectangle right in the center: 840 × 1350 pixels where your text and faces can shine, untouched and glorious.
Tiktok Safe Zone
TikTok’s a button bonanza. If it can hover or pop up, it will.
Here’s what to avoid:
- The top 160 pixels – username and track info live here.
- The bottom 480 pixels – literally a minefield of icons.
- 120 pixels on each side – give your captions some elbow room.
🟢 What’s left?
A vertical stage of 840 × 1280 pixels. That’s where your important stuff should perform. Everything else is the splash zone.
YouTube Safe Zone
YouTube’s a little more generous — but not by much.
YouTube Shorts safe area guide:
- The top 380 pixels – title & channel info usually float here.
- The bottom 380 pixels – where comments, likes, and subs pile in.
- And trim 60 pixels off the left, and 120 on the right.
Pro tip 👇
The safe zone is about 960 × 1160 pixels, and it’s ever-so-slightly shifted to the left. You might feel tempted to nudge your text left too — but resist! It usually ends up looking off-balance.
Universal Safe Zones
Let’s be real—most of us just want one overlay that works everywhere.
This universal template gives you a generous safe margin that avoids all the major social app UIs—without boxing you into a postage stamp-sized workspace. 😉
